Bedspreads and comforters

All about Duvet and Duvet Covers

A duvet or duvet cover as it is also known can be described as a large bag that comes filled with super insulating material. Duvets are generally designed for beds and because of the high insulating material used in them, mostly eiderdown; they would replace layers upon layers of quilts, blankets, and comforters that most people use.

Apart from very cold regions, or during the bone-chilling months of winter, a single duvet is normally warm enough to keep you comfortable and warm throughout the night. This type of bedding perhaps originated from Northern Europe, and has today spread across the world because of its ease and convenience of use, not to mention the fact that it is readily available in the market.

It is not uncommon to find duvet covers being confused with comforters. However, there are certain things that would help tell the two apart. First and foremost, duvets are mostly designed as bed covers. The down used to fill duvets can be very hard and expensive to clean regularly, no wonder most people find it easy to use washable covers on duvets which can easily be removed and cleaned.

The other notable thing about duvets is the fact that they are flat and not as puffy as comforters, because eiderdown, the main filling material used on duvets, is a very effective insulator and doesn’t need to have large amounts used for it to be an efficient insulator. Last but not least, duvets are a detached piece of bedding which can be used with bed sheets only and no other covers or blankets.

On the flip side of the coin, a comforter is not a standalone bed cover. The whole item can be cleaned and is often designed to be both a functional and decorative piece of bedding. The fact that washable insulators are used on comforters means that they tend to be less efficient than their duvet counterparts, which results in the need for additional insulation, thus creating that synonymous puffy appearance. It isn’t uncommon to find comforters used together with blankets, something which most people find stifling to say the least.

When buying a duvet or several duvet covers, rest assured you will never go wrong with one made of eiderdown. Also, you need to look closely at how the duvet has been sown because tiny holes in between the stitches can allow room for filling to move around. You might also want to consider a quilted duvet because it ensures that the filling does not move around and clump on one side of the duvet.

When it comes to the color of the duvet that you plan to buy, it shouldn’t be a major point of consideration really because most people opt for washable covers. Rest assured that the market has a wide range of covers in different colors and patterns to suit all tastes and preferences out there, so you are sure to find something that you are looking for.
